However, having less acid in your stomach can affect how well certain medications are absorbed.
Before taking pantoprazole, it’s important to be aware of the medication’s interactions.

Some interactions may affect how well other medications work, while others may cause unwanted side effects.
Antiretroviral Medications
Pantoprazole can interact withantiretroviral medications.
These are medications typically prescribed totreat HIV.
As mentioned above, pantoprazole works by reducing the amount of acid your stomach releases.
Certain antiretroviral medications need an acidic environment to be absorbed into your system.
Combining pantoprazole with these medications may reduce how much of the drug your body absorbs.
This may also cause the virus to becomeresistant to the medication.
They may recommend you wait at least 12 hours after taking certain HIV drugs before taking pantoprazole.
In some cases, they may have you use a different treatment for your stomach acid.
You should not take pantoprazole if you take an HIV medication that contains rilpivirine.
This is because pantoprazole reduces rilpivirine levels too low for the medication to work.
Warfarin
Warfarin is a blood thinner prescribed to treat and preventblood clots.
It works by blocking a protein involved in the blood clotting process.
PPIs can interact with warfarin.
Taking pantoprazole together with warfarin can affect the blood clotting process.
This can increase your risk of bleeding.
Let your cardiologist know if you take pantoprazole during your warfarin treatment.
They’ll need to monitor how warfarin is working to reduce blood clotting.
In some cases, they may need to adjust your warfarin dosage.
Iron Supplements
Iron supplementscan help prevent or treatiron-deficiency anemia.
Iron supplements are usually taken by mouth and need an acidic environment for the best absorption.
Talk with your healthcare professional if you gotta take an iron supplement while taking pantoprazole.
They can talk with you about the best way to manage your treatment.
In some cases, healthcare providers may offer the option of receivingiron by an infusioninto a vein.
This dosage form doesn’t require an acidic environment for absorption.
Methotrexate
Methotrexateis typically prescribed as a treatment for certain types of cancer and someautoimmune conditions.
Taking pantoprazole with methotrexate may increase methotrexate levels in your body.
This may raise your risk of side effects from methotrexate, includingmethotrexate toxicities.
These can include:
Methotrexate toxicities are more likely to happen if you take high doses of the medication.
Talk with your oncologist or rheumatologist before taking pantoprazole.
Methotrexate is typically taken once per week.
Cancer Medications
Certainoral cancer medicationsare best absorbed in an acidic environment.
So, medications that reduce your stomach acid, including pantoprazole, can decrease their absorption.
This may prevent the cancer medication from working as well as it should to kill cancer cells.
They may recommend a different treatment for your stomach acid condition.
Mycophenolate Mofetil
Mycophenolate mofetil (CellCept)is animmunosuppressant.
It’s prescribed to help prevent organ rejection after an organ transplant.
Taking pantoprazole with mycophenolate mofetil could reduce how much of the medication your body absorbs.
This may make mycophenolate mofetil less effective.
Before taking pantoprazole, talk with your prescriber about all your medications.
They may recommend you avoid taking pantoprazole while taking mycophenolate mofetil.
If you take both medications together, your healthcare professional will monitor how well mycophenolate mofetil works.
It reduces the acidity in your stomach, which may cause interactions with some medications.
Taking pantoprazole with these medications or supplements may affect how well they work.
Pantoprazole can also increase your risk of side effects with certain medications, including methotrexate and warfarin.
Before starting pantoprazole, talk with your healthcare professional about all your medications.
Doing so can help them plan your treatment accordingly or adjust your treatments as needed.
