Diagnosis
A healthcare provider will conduct a medical history, report symptoms, and a physical examination.

They may be able to rule out a fracture based on the physical exam.
An X-ray is often used in diagnosing and confirming a broken hand.
This can be accomplished with a hand or finger splint.
Internal fixation uses surgery to place pins through or wires around various bones to hold everything in place.
During fixation, the doctor will usually treat pain with medications.
Other broken bones require different specific treatments, depending on what’s broken.
About 10% of all injuries seen in the emergency department are broken hands and fingers.
Depending on the fracture, you may still be able to move your fingers.
The ability to wiggle your fingers does not automatically mean your hand is not broken.
You may not necessarily experience all of the symptoms with a fracture.
A broken bone in the hand will typically take about a month or more to heal.
Most stable fractures will heal in four to six weeks, but more complicated breaks can take longer.
If surgery is needed, it may take longer to heal.
