Hemolytic anemia happens when red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced.

There are many possible causes of hemolytic anemia, including certain medications and inherited conditions likesickle cell diseaseandthalassemia.

Depending on the cause, the treatment may involve a blood transfusion, medications, or surgery.

The list of causes of hemolytic anemia can be broadly categorized as being intrinsic or extrinsic.

Intrinsic Causes

The termintrinsicdescribes defects in the production of red blood cells themselves.

Left untreated, around 50% of cases will result in stillbirth.

Those who survive may improve with a blood transfusion, light therapy, and medications.

Symptoms

Many of the symptoms of hemolytic anemia are not unlike those ofother types of anemia.

Left untreated, hemolytic anemia can cause serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

It has many causes, including genetic disorders, infections, and autoimmune diseases.

Symptoms may include fatigue, rapid heart rate, pallor, dizziness, and breathing problems.

A complete blood count and other tests can help diagnose hemolytic anemia.

Treatments include a blood transfusion, IVIG, immunosuppressants, and a bone marrow transplant.
