Endometriosis, a common gynecologic condition, is often associated with weight change.

So can chronic pain that leads to a sedentary lifestyle and overeating.

There isn’t yet clear evidence to support the claim that endometriosis directly causes weight gain.

In fact, the opposite may be true.

Some people diagnosed with endometriosis reportunexplained weight loss, nausea, and a decreased appetite with their symptoms.

Some say they look pregnant.

People with endometriosis tend to have very high estrogen levels, which can cause a hormonal imbalance.

Your hormones play a role in regulating your menstrual cycle, mood, energy, and weight.

Hormone treatments work by stopping the production of hormones and slowing the growth of endometrial tissues.

Hormone therapy may also cause side effects such as weight gain, bloating, or bleeding between periods.

Sometimes the fallopian tubes and ovaries may also be removed, which will induce menopause.

Weight gain, especially around the waist, is a common symptom of surgical or nonsurgical menopause.

Hysterectomy is not the only surgical option for endometriosis.

There’s a lower consumption of fresh fruits and dairy.

There is little evidence of one specific diet providing more benefits than another.

Studies that explore a link between inflammation and endometriosis find thatanti-inflammatory dietsmay help.

They include sources of vitamin C, vitamin E, fish oil, and olive oil.

TheFODMAP diet(fermentableoligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols) also shows promise.

Exercise for Weight Loss

Endometriosis can make it harder to lose weight.

While physical activity can seem daunting when dealing with chronic pain and discomfort, research suggests some benefits.

Talk with your healthcare provider about integrating these therapies into your overall treatment plan.

Pain may indirectly contribute to weight gain.
