Symptoms
Flaking and itching are common with a dry scalp, regardless of the cause.
If you have psoriasis, the flakes will form a plaque.
You may also have plaques on other parts of your body.
It doesn’t usually lead to additional health problems.
However, stubborn dandruff that won’t clear can negatively impact self-esteem and confidence.
Psoriasis is a more serious condition because it’s a chronicautoimmune diseasethat has effects beyond your skin.
Approximately 25% of people who have one autoimmune disease are at risk of developing additional autoimmune diseases.
Potential Causes
Dandruff usually develops because of irritation.
Sometimes, they will order blood tests to detect an autoimmune condition.
Healthcare providers can also diagnose dandruff based on a physical exam and scalp inspection.
Topical creams and ointments containing retinoids or a steroid are usually the first medications prescribed.
Over-the-counter (OTC) and prescriptionshampoos for psoriasismay also be recommended.
