What Causes a Super Sense of Smell?
Some people are simply born with a stronger sense of smell (olfaction).
The exact genes responsible for inherited hyperosmia are unknown.
However, scientists have identified one gene called SCN9A that may play a part.
The gene codes for sodium channels, a component of nerve cells.

There are no specific medications designed to treat hyperosmia.
When it’s triggered by an underlying condition, treating that condition with appropriate medications may help improve symptoms.
If needed, your provider may prescribe stronger options like Compazine, Reglan, or Zofran.
Nerve ablation:In rare situations, hyperosmia can be such a severe problem that you may need surgery.
Is Hyperosmia a Disability?
Hyperosmia by itself is not classified as a disability.
However, it may be considered a disability if it significantly impacts your daily functioning or ability to work.
