Aside from some shared characteristics, migraines may also actually increase your risk of stroke.

It is most likely to occur when the aura has been going on for more than an hour.

Scientists are still trying to understand why this happens and what the cause-effect relationship is.

Stroke and migraine symptoms

Verywell / JR Bee

Some stroke survivors begin to experienceheadaches after having a stroke.

Generally, though, these headaches arent described as migraines and theyre not normally associated with neurological symptoms.

Risk Factors

Migraine and stroke are both associated with a genetic tendency.

If you have a family history of stroke, youre more likely to have a stroke.

Similarly, if you have a family history of migraine, youre much more likely to experience migraines.

Of course, bothmigraineandstrokeare associated with additional risk factors that must be independently considered.

Whether or not birth control pills are right for you depends on a number of factors.

Treatment

Migraines and strokes are managed very differently from one another.

Migraines requiretreatment with medication, which doesnt prevent or improve a stroke.

The medications used for stroke dont prevent or improve migraines either.

Summary

Migraine (especially migraine with aura) and stroke are two different conditions with similar symptoms.

These symptoms may include vision changes and disorientation.

Stroke may occur during a migraine, but this is extremely rare.
