The normal resting heart rate varies by age.

Your heart rate at rest is an indication of your general fitness.

A lower resting heart rate generally indicates a higher degree of fitness.

What Is a Dangerous Heart Rate?

A rate consistently below 60 bpm is calledbradycardia.

This could be a normal rate for well-trained athletes, for example, and not cause any problems.

However, in others, it could be due to a variety of health conditions (see below).

A rate consistently above 100 bpm at rest is known astachycardia.

Causes of Low Resting Heart Rate

Having a low heart rate is not necessarily a bad thing.

The aim is to improve what is known as yourtarget heart rate zone.

The target heart rate zone and maximum heart rate vary by a person’s age.

Other symptoms can occur along with a heart rate that is too high or low.

For most adults, the normal resting heart rate is 60100 bpm.

It can be even lower in athletes or people who regularly engage in strenuous physical activity.

Too low a rate, though, can be a health concern as much as too high can be.
